Nanofiltration follows the same principle as reverse osmosis and the only differences are that (1) separation line is very low (2) ions solved in the water will be filtered in a better fashion. Nanofiltration is a money-saving operation. The salt rejection rates vary from ca. 80 – 85%. Nanofiltration plants can be used for classic softening because calcium and magnesium polyvalent ions can be effectively kept back. Nanofiltration plants would be a cost-effective option when compared to reverse osmosis plants whenever lower salt rejection is acceptable. As they can operate at a low pressure, only a small high pressure pump is needed. This will save on infrastructure and energy consumption. Nanofiltration plants technically lower costs because expensive regular regenerations with large salt amounts can be redundant. ProMinent delivers reverse osmosis plants, in another form, as Nanofiltration plants.
