As a key component in acoustical office panels, Johns Manville Dura-Glass? nonwovens are excellent sound absorbing structures. Nonwoven materials, due to their porosity, are a fitting material for application in sound attenuation.
Key characteristics of sound attenuating office partitions are low flammability, stiffness, smoothness, uniform color, and, of course, the permeability, porosity, and density necessary to provide sound attenuation. Mat composition, fiber size, fiber type, and binder selection can be adjusted to meet an individual application. Dura-Glass? 82 series products, commonly used in office panel applications, are wet-laid fabrics bonded with formaldehyde-free flame retardant binder.
Effective sound attenuating structures can be made economically using structured or layered wet-laid nonwoven fabrics. The nonwovens must be formed with an eye toward the properties well known to influence air flow through them at low sound pressures. These factors are thickness, porosity, tortuosity, and density. Air spaces within or behind the structures enhance sound absorption.
