m-value, p-value and Alkalinity
The determinantion of m- and p-values by titration allows the calculation of the
Hydroxyde-, Carbonate- and Hydrogencarbonate concentration (OH-, CO3
2, HCO3
-) in
water samples. This provides a meausure for the Alcalinity and Buffer capacity.
The determination of ?m and ?p-values provides a measure for the concentration of
free mineral acids and Carbonic Acid (carbon dioxide).
Method
The measurement is performed in two steps by titration with dil. Hydrochloric acid to a
pH of 8.2 (p-value) and to a pH of 4.3 (m-value). The negative values (-p, -m-value) are
determined by titration with a dil. sodium hydroxide solution. Other pH-values for the
end point may be configured by the operator
