Terahertz light - as well named far IR radiation - has remarkable properties. Many common materials and tissues are semi-transparent and have "terahertz signatures", permitting them to identify and analyze samples. Moreover, the low energy terahertz radiation has non-ionizing properties and is used safely.
By applying different measurement accessories and software analysis packages, the Terahertz base technology can be brought to bear to a wide range of applications; including drug discovery and formulation; medical and dental diagnostics; security screening, explosives and contraband detection.
In cases of the above mentioned applications where no phase information is needed, FTIR technology can serve as an attractive alternative solution. Spectral information down to 5 cm-1 (=0.15 THz) can be collected e.g. with Bruker VERTEX 80v FTIR vacuum spectrometers.
