It is stated in the VDMA standard sheet 24588 that the amount of water in HE pressure fluids is to be kept below 1000ppm or 0.01%. Based on VDMA, HLP fluids should not have any free water. The reason for this is because free water can cause turbidity. Turbidity is a 2-phase mixture or emulsion in which small droplets of water are present in the pressure fluid and this is visible to the human eye. This is why it is highly recommended to carry out a mechanical separation of these water droplets. The separation of water droplets is called the coalescer principle. The MAHLE Industry developed the Coalescer filter which is specifically created to separate water from the hydraulic fluids.
