Clocks that operate from 1kHz to 170MHz are solid state, silicon-based oscillators. Each oscillator, with linear technology, is programmable according to frequency through the pin-strapping, serial interface (SPI or I2C) or resistor connection.

They can be used for everyday purposes, like ASIC, microprocessors, PGAs or even UARTS. However, they are ideal for switching regulator clocks because they provide synchronization as well as reduce EMI (through spread spectrum).
