Thanks to Hot Swap controllers, there is no need to power live system backplanes down, since the Hot Swap lets cards and electronic circuit boards to be plugged in directly into the latter. At the same time, critical systems like communication paraphernalia and servers can operate seamlessly since boards are either pulled out or hot plugged in, perhaps to manage load capacity better or for maintaining systems.
Essentially, a Hot Swap controller does the job of a current controller and a fault isolator. With boards inserted, first the Hot Swap controller detects power, then goes on to ramping up board capacitors gradually, while avoiding system reset, supply glitches in the backplane and connector sparks along the way. In case of a short-circuit downstream, the electronic circuit breaker on the controller cuts power to the card, thus dissuading any further impact of the fault upstream.
