Infineon 3D image sensors works on the time-of-flight principle to measure every single pixel, brightness and distance between the sensor to objects. This is done by the modulated infrared light emitted by the 3D camera. The time travel of the infrared light from the camera to the object and back to the camera is measured which provides the elapsed time, or "time of flight".
The highly optimized Infineon 3D Image Sensors baed on the time-of-flight principle is highly capable to recognize even tiniest movements like single finger tips. This process is not usually delivered in other technologies of data captures. In certain cases, only larger movements are detected or the camera is incapable to distinguish a finger from the rest of the hand which overlaps in the background or some times the camera is too bulky for fitting into small consumer devices.
